Is free Bitcoin mining real?
Yes, in the form of mining rewards apps. (An app that mines on your phone and pays meaningful bitcoin doesn’t exist.) Mining rewards apps work differently: they give you some hashrate for free and credit you the estimated bitcoin that hashrate would be expected to mine, using the network’s real numbers.

Why can’t a phone mine Bitcoin?
Your expected share of mining rewards equals your share of the network’s hashrate. Machines built only for Bitcoin’s SHA-256 hash (ASICs) do hundreds of trillions of hashes a second each. A phone does a few million.

Network hashrate is live, updated hourly. The phone is a generous illustration (10 MH/s); the ASIC is an example current-generation machine at 200 TH/s.
The network is about 100 trillion times faster than that phone. Mining would also drain the battery and heat the phone, for less than the electricity costs. Apple’s rules say apps “may not mine for cryptocurrencies unless the processing is performed off device (e.g. cloud-based mining)”. An app that says your phone is mining real bitcoin is misleading you.
How do you spot a fake mining app?
The US FTC and the FBI’s IC3 keep warning about the same patterns: fixed daily returns, earnings that depend on recruiting people, balances that never reach your wallet, and a “fee” or “tax” you must pay before a withdrawal. Test yourself:
