Can a phone mine Bitcoin?
It can run the maths, so in theory yes. In practice, no. Mining is a lottery where each hash is a ticket, and your chance of winning a block is your share of all the hashes on the network. A phoneâs share is too small to matter.
Definition · Mining on a phone
Running Bitcoinâs SHA-256 proof of work on a phoneâs own processor. It works, but a phoneâs hashrate is so small next to the network that its expected reward rounds to zero, and both app stores ban it.
How slow is a phone? The test above measures your browser, which runs one thread of plain JavaScript. Native mining code is faster, and the Bitcoin Wiki keeps tables of what CPUs and ARM chips manage. We use a generous 10 MH/s for a phone, so nobody can say we lowballed it. Can you mine Bitcoin on Android or iPhone?
Both stores draw the same line: hashing on the phone is out, mining done elsewhere is fine.

Appleâs guideline 3.1.5(ii) is short: apps âmay not mine for cryptocurrencies unless the processing is performed off device (e.g. cloud-based mining)â. Guideline 2.4.2 bans background processes such as cryptocurrency mining, including inside ads. Google Playâs developer policy doesnât allow apps that mine on the device either, and permits apps that manage mining remotely.

How do you spot a fake mining app?
Fake mining apps follow a script. Some show a balance that climbs but never reaches you. Others really do run a miner, for someone else, on your battery. Hold the app youâre looking at against this list:

Red flags
A phone can't find a Bitcoin block in any human lifetime, and both app stores ban on-device mining.
Something is burning your CPU. At best it's wasted power, at worst hidden malware mining for someone else.
Real mining output moves with difficulty, fees and halvings. A fixed number isn't coming from mining.
Paying to get your own coins out is one of the most common crypto scams the FTC warns about.
When earnings depend on recruiting, the money comes from new sign-ups, not from mining.
No real app needs it. Whoever has those words can empty your wallet.
Those permissions let an app read your screen and act for you. A mining app has no use for them.
If nobody is accountable, there's nobody to complain to when the balance never arrives.
Good signs
You can check the numbers against public network data.
That's simply true of mining.
You stay in control of where the coins go.
Store listing alone isn't proof, but it adds reviews and a real company you can check.

Frequently asked questions
Can you mine Bitcoin on your phone?
Technically a phone can compute Bitcoinâs SHA-256 hash, but itâs so slow next to the network that it would take billions of years on average to find one block. Apple and Google also donât allow apps that mine on the device. Mining apps that work do the hashing off your phone.
Can I mine Bitcoin on Android?
Not in any useful way. Google Play doesnât allow apps that mine cryptocurrency on the device, and a sideloaded miner would heat your phone and drain the battery for an amount that rounds to zero. Cloud mining apps on Google Play work out rewards on a server instead.
Can I mine Bitcoin on an iPhone?
No. Appleâs App Review Guidelines say apps may not mine for cryptocurrencies unless the processing is done off the device, for example cloud-based mining. Any iPhone mining app you find in the App Store works that way.
What is the best Bitcoin mining app?
Judge it rather than trust a ranking: a named company and public terms, rewards shown as estimates with the hashrate and formula behind them, withdrawals to your own address with the fee shown first, and no fee or deposit before you can withdraw. Any app that says your phone itself mines Bitcoin fails the first test.
Does a Bitcoin mining app drain my battery?
