How many satoshis are in a bitcoin?

One bitcoin (BTC) is 100,000,000 satoshis. The satoshi, named after Bitcoin’s creator Satoshi Nakamoto, is the smallest unit the blockchain records, 0.00000001 BTC. Every other unit is a fixed multiple of it, so converting is a matter of moving the decimal point.

Definition · Satoshi (sat)

The smallest on-chain unit of bitcoin: one hundred-millionth of a bitcoin (0.00000001 BTC). Balances and fees are ultimately counted in whole satoshis.

What are all the Bitcoin units?

Every unit is a fixed multiple of the satoshi. Millisatoshis exist only on the Lightning Network.

In practice you will mostly meet BTC and sats. mBTC and bits appear in some older wallets; the finney, named after early Bitcoin developer Hal Finney, is rarely used.

How is the value in dollars or euros calculated?

The converter multiplies the amount in BTC by a cached BTC/USD price (currently about $83,361, refreshed periodically), then by the exchange rate from US dollars to the currency you pick. The result is indicative: exchanges quote slightly different prices, and the market moves between refreshes.

About the data & accuracy

Bitcoin prices and exchange rates are fetched from third-party sources and refreshed periodically, so they can lag the live market and differ from the figure your exchange or wallet shows at the exact moment of a trade. Results are indicative estimates provided “as is” for informational purposes only, and no accuracy, completeness or timeliness is guaranteed.

This is not financial, investment, or tax advice. Always verify the current amount on your own exchange or wallet before sending funds or making any decision.

Frequently asked questions

How many satoshis are in one bitcoin?

One bitcoin is exactly 100,000,000 satoshis (sats). One satoshi is 0.00000001 BTC, the smallest amount that can be recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain.

What is a millisatoshi?

A millisatoshi (msat) is one thousandth of a satoshi. It exists only on the Lightning Network, which tracks balances and invoice amounts in msats; on-chain transactions settle in whole satoshis.

What is the difference between mBTC and μBTC?

mBTC (millibitcoin) is one thousandth of a bitcoin, or 100,000 sats. μBTC, also called a bit, is one millionth of a bitcoin, or 100 sats.

How accurate is the dollar value?

It uses a cached BTC price and exchange rates refreshed periodically, so it can lag the live market a little. Always check the amount on your exchange or wallet before sending funds.

Why do wallets show sats instead of BTC?

Everyday amounts of bitcoin are small, so whole-number sats (for example 5,000 sats) are easier to read than many decimal places (0.00005 BTC). Both describe exactly the same amount.
