What is hashrate?

Definition · Hashrate

The number of hash calculations a miner, or the whole Bitcoin network, performs per second. It is the unit of mining power, written as H/s with metric prefixes such as TH/s (trillions) and EH/s (quintillions).

Bitcoin miners repeatedly run block headers through the SHA-256 hash function, looking for a result below the network’s target. More hashes per second means more guesses, and so a proportionally larger chance of finding the next block. Read the full explanation in our guide to Bitcoin mining.

How do hashrate units convert?

SI prefixes, each 1,000 times the previous one. Lower-case k is the SI symbol for kilo.
UnitNameHashes per second
H/shash per second1
kH/skilohash1,000
MH/smegahash1,000,000
GH/sgigahash10⁹
TH/sterahash10¹²
PH/spetahash10¹⁵
EH/sexahash10¹⁸

To convert, multiply by 1,000 for every step down the table and divide by 1,000 for every step up. For example, 250 TH/s = 250,000 GH/s = 0.25 PH/s.

of network hashrate

The network’s hashrate can’t be measured directly; it is estimated from how quickly blocks are found at the current difficulty, so short-term figures are noisy. Your expected share of mining rewards is simply your hashrate divided by the network’s:

BTC per day = (your hashrate ÷ network hashrate) × 144 blocks × block reward
Expected BTC per day, ignoring luck, pool fees and future difficulty changes.

Frequently asked questions

How many TH/s are in one EH/s?

One exahash per second (EH/s) is 1,000,000 terahashes per second (TH/s). Each step up the scale (kH, MH, GH, TH, PH, EH) is 1,000 times the previous one.

Is this a hashrate calculator too?

Yes. Besides converting units, it shows roughly how much BTC the hashrate you type would mine a day at today’s network: your hashrate divided by the network’s, times 144 blocks, times the block reward. For electricity and pool fees, use the Bitcoin mining calculator.

Is GH/s bigger than TH/s?

No. One TH/s is 1,000 GH/s. Terahash (10¹²) is the next step above gigahash (10⁹).

What hashrate does a modern Bitcoin miner have?

Current ASIC miners typically run at roughly 100 to 300+ TH/s each. A phone or laptop manages only megahashes per second, which is why they can’t mine Bitcoin meaningfully.

What is the Bitcoin network hashrate today?

It is in the hundreds of exahashes per second and changes constantly. This page shows a live estimate refreshed hourly; network hashrate is estimated from how fast blocks are found at the current difficulty.

Does hashrate alone decide mining rewards?

Your expected share of rewards is your hashrate divided by the network’s. What you keep also depends on electricity cost, pool fees and the bitcoin price. Try the mining profit calculator.
