What is a satoshi?

Definition · Satoshi (sat)

The smallest unit of bitcoin the blockchain records: one hundred-millionth of a bitcoin, or 0.00000001 BTC. It’s named after Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.

Everyday amounts of bitcoin are small, so wallets and Lightning apps often show them in sats: 5,000 sats is easier to read than 0.00005 BTC. The Lightning Network also counts in millisatoshis, a thousandth of a sat, though on-chain payments settle in whole sats. The satoshi guide covers where the name comes from and how the units stack up.

With a supply capped at 21 million BTC, there will only ever be about 2.1 quadrillion sats. How many bitcoins are left shows how many are still to be mined.

How do you convert sats to dollars?

USD = sats Ă· 100,000,000 × BTC price  ·  sats = USD Ă· BTC price × 100,000,000
The BTC price is the only moving part. The 100 million never changes.
