What is the Avalon Nano 3S?
Definition · Avalon Nano 3S
A compact SHA-256 Bitcoin miner from Canaan, launched at CES 2025 and sold as a portable heater that mines. It runs 12 mining chips on a 4 nm process, joins your Wi-Fi through a supplied USB dongle, and is set up from the Avalon Family app.

It mines the same way a warehouse full of Antminer S21s does, just with a dozen chips instead of hundreds. The Nano 3S is also in our hardware comparison.
What do the Low, Medium and High modes do?
The manual lists three operating modes. You switch with a double-click on the power button, or under Working Mode in the Avalon Family app. Canaan rates only the top one.
Low
30 dB, rated
The quietest setting. Canaan’s product page measures it at 30 dB in a 25 °C room. Power and hashrate aren’t published.
Medium
In between
Less heat and noise than High. Canaan publishes no figures, so check the app for your unit’s real draw.
High
6 TH/s, 140 W
The rated setting: full hashrate, full heat, up to 40 dB.
There’s also a Night Mode that switches off the screen and the lights. In the calculator at the top, Low and Medium take the watts your app shows, and scale the hashrate at High’s efficiency.
How much heat does the Avalon Nano 3S give?
All 140 W. A miner does no mechanical work and sends out almost no light, so the electricity ends up as heat in the room. The manual puts the air coming out at 60 to 70 °C in a 25 °C room. That’s warm to the hand, not a furnace.
Heat output, in watts
140 W is a small heater: nice under a desk or in a small room, too little for a living room in winter. If you want a miner that heats a room properly, Canaan’s own Avalon Mini 3 is rated at 800 W. The mining at home guide compares them and covers wiring and noise.
Is the Nano 3S cheaper than an electric heater?
Per kWh of heat, it costs the same as any plain electric heater, and it mines a little bitcoin on top. So if you’d be running an electric heater in that room anyway, the Nano 3S swaps one for the other and adds the bitcoin.

It won’t beat a heat pump, which moves several kWh of heat for each kWh it uses. And in summer, when nobody wants the heat, it’s back to being a 140 W bill with a small bitcoin estimate attached.
What are the Nano 3S’s odds of finding a block?
Point it at a solo pool and it becomes a lottery ticket that also warms the room. Your chance per block is your hashrate divided by the network’s, and there are about 144 blocks a day.

High mode, nonstop, at today’s live network hashrate, which usually grows, so real odds tend to be a little lower. Whether or not a block lands, the bill is the same. Only count the heat as useful in months you’d heat anyway.

What would the Nano 3S earn in a normal pool?
In a regular pool, luck is shared and you get small, steady amounts. Here’s a month of that against the power bill at different electricity prices, running nonstop in High:
Estimated pool earnings vs power, per 30-day month
Below about 6.9¢ per kWh the bitcoin covers the power; above it, the heat is what you’re paying for. The hashprice guide explains why the per-TH/s figure moves.
How does the Nano 3S compare with a Bitaxe and a full ASIC?
| Device | Hashrate | Power | J/TH | Noise | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitaxe Gamma | 1.1 TH/s | 22 W | 21 | small fan | Tinkering, open source |
| Avalon Nano 3S | 6.0 TH/s | 140 W | 23.3 | 30 to 40 dB | A desk heater that mines |
| Avalon Mini 3 | 38 TH/s | 800 W | 21.3 | 55 dB | Heating a room |
| Antminer S21 XP | 270 TH/s | 3,645 W | 13.5 | 76 dB | A garage or a farm |
Against a Bitaxe, the Nano 3S trades openness for polish: a finished case, an app, a filter and about 6 times the hashrate. Against an industrial ASIC it’s tiny and a little less efficient, but it’s quiet enough to share a room with. Every current model is in the hardware comparison.
How do you set up an Avalon Nano 3S, and is it safe?
- 1
Plug in the adapter
Use the supplied GaN adapter and cable, and push the USB-C plug fully home.
- 2
Add it in the app
Activate it in the Avalon Family app and connect it to your Wi-Fi with the supplied dongle.
- 3
Pick a pool
Scan the F2Pool card in the box, or enter any pool, solo or regular, under Mining Configuration.
- 4
Choose a mode
Double-click the power button, or use Working Mode in the app. Clean the air filter when it asks.
Is the Avalon Nano 3S worth it?
Good reasons to get one
- You want a small heater and like the idea of it mining
- A long-shot solo ticket that never expires
- Learning how mining works, with a friendly app
- Quiet enough for a living space
Not good reasons
- Expecting it to pay for itself or earn an income
- Heating a whole room in winter on 140 W
- Running it all summer when you don’t need heat
- Treating it as an investment
The honest pitch is Canaan’s own: a heater that mines. If you’d run a small electric heater anyway, it does that job and adds a lottery ticket. If you wouldn’t, it’s a 140 W hobby with a small bitcoin estimate.
Can you mine bitcoin without a device?
Yes. In the CloudMineCrypto app you mine for free with the free plan, ads, games, offers and daily check-ins, and your estimated BTC ticks up while your plans run. No device, no fan, no power bill, and you withdraw to your own wallet, Lightning included. Paid plans are an optional boost for more speed; they usually mine less than they cost.
Good to know: rewards are estimates, move with the network and aren’t guaranteed. A plan doesn’t give you ownership of, or a share in, any specific hardware or pool. Terms apply.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Avalon Nano 3S’s hashrate and power?
Canaan rates it at 6 TH/s ±5% on 140 W, about 23.3 J/TH. That’s High mode. Canaan doesn’t publish figures for Low or Medium.
How loud is the Avalon Nano 3S?
Canaan rates it at 30 to 40 dB, with 30 dB in Low mode at 25 °C room temperature. That’s quiet enough for a living room or an office.
How much does the Avalon Nano 3S earn a day?
In a pool, about $0.23 a day at today’s live hashprice, before pool fees, running nonstop. Its power costs more than that above about 6.9¢ per kWh. Treat the bitcoin as a bonus on the heat, not income.
Can an Avalon Nano 3S find a block solo?
It can, but the odds are long: about 1 in 3,115 per year at today’s network hashrate, an average wait of 3,115 years. If it lands, it pays a whole block.
Will the Avalon Nano 3S heat a room?
It’s a 140 W heater. That adds warmth to a small room or a desk corner, but it won’t replace a normal 1,500 W heater: you’d need about 11 of them.
Avalon Nano 3S or Bitaxe?
The Nano 3S has about 6 times the hashrate of a Bitaxe Gamma and gives real warmth, in a finished case with an app. A Bitaxe is open source, tiny and tinker-friendly, on about 22 W.
